We Are The Millennials

What is a millennial? An article entitled, “Millennials: Confident Connected. Open to Change,” defined millennials as, “The American teens and twenty-something who are making the passage into adulthood at the start of a new millennium.” (PewResearch Center, 2010) Throughout all the articles we read about our generation they recognized both positives and negatives.

One of the positive points they expressed was that our generation was open to change. Our world is made up of a numerous amount of different races, ethnicities, religions, etc. As the world keeps growing and changing so do our views. I believe the millennials are much more open to change and diversity because we grew up around it, so we’re use to it. I personally believe I am open to change because you never know what life is going to throw at you. You pretty much have to be open to change because if your not you’re just going to be stressed out and it will bring you down. I learned a long time ago that you couldn’t control everything; no matter how hard you try.

On the other hand, there were some negatives that the articles mentioned about the millennium generation. An article entitled, “Are Millennials the Screwed Generation?” stated that, “Employers are often replacing entry-level positions meant for graduates with people who have more experience because the pool of applicants is so much larger.” (Kotkin, 2012) Now that jobs are becoming harder and harder to get, employers are becoming more picky. A main thing many employers look at is how much experience you have. Most millennials are still furthering their education and trying to receive a degree, so we don’t have as much experience as the other generations. Even though I don’t like it, I have to agree with this. The millennium generation is busy spending their time trying to get a higher education to thus get a better job, but employers are hiring the older generations based on experience.

So when I’m asked if I’m a millennial, I believe I am. We are embrace our self-expression, are upbeat and open to change, confident, etc. If I am anything, if we are anything, we are the millennials!
